How long can I stay in Portugal?

Portugal is often the second half of an Iberian trip, and that is where its rules bite. The days you spent in Spain come with you, and crossing in from a country with no border check gives you a declaration to file.

Portugal

As a visitor
90days in any 180

Up to 90 days in any 180-day period.1

Visa
US citizens and British citizens need no visa for stays of up to 90 days in any 180-day period.2
Declare
Entering Portugal from another Schengen country across a border with no checks, you must declare your entry within three working days.3
If you miss it
Missing the declaration is an administrative offence, with a fine of 60 to 160 euros.4

Arriving from Spain or France

A flight from outside Europe lands you at a border check, and the check covers it. Come in from another Schengen country, where no one looks at your passport, and the declaration in the card above is yours to make.

The duty does not apply if you go straight to a hotel, or to other lodging covered by the law's guest-registration rule.5

Worked example

A road trip from Madrid to the Algarve

  1. You land in Madrid on 1 March 2027 and drive west, crossing into Portugal on 9 April: 40 Schengen days so far, both end days counted.6How we count: 1 March to 9 April 2027, both days included, is 40 days.
  2. That road border has no checks, so the entry into Portugal is yours to declare within three working days, unless you check into a hotel.35
  3. Spain and Portugal share one count: 10 April to 29 May 2027 adds 50 days, and 29 May is your last.71How we count: 40 days in Spain plus 50 in Portugal makes 90, all inside one 180-day window.
